Genealogical Sketch:

Jane Agnew’s father, Samuel Agnew, died when she was about 10 years-old. Samuel Agnew had relocated to Abbeville County (South Carolina) just prior to the Revolutionary War and was one of the first blacksmiths in the county. Samuel Agnew served as a private in the South Carolina militia fighting against the British.

By 1815, John Brownlee married his second wife Maria Lomax in Abbeville County, South Carolina. Maria Lomax was the younger sister of his brother-in-law Aaron Lomax.[1] Aaron Lomax had married John Brownlee’s sister (Elizabeth Brownlee) in 1812.

  • By 1823, the daughter of John Brownlee (Sarah “Sally” Ann Brownlee) married John R. Rasor (1799-1846) in Abbeville County, South Carolina. Sally Rasor was named as the granddaughter of George Brownlee Sr. in his last will in 1833.
  • On February 15, 1835, the daughter of John Brownlee (Elizabeth Brownlee) is believed to have married James M. Seawright in Abbeville County, South Carolina.
  • On July 28, 1848, the son of John Brownlee (John A. Brownlee) is believed to have married Mary Jane Cowan in Abbeville County, South Carolina.
  • The son of John Brownlee Seaborn Lomax Brownlee) is believed to have married Isabella Hennegan in Abbeville County, South Carolina. Seaborn Lomax Brownlee was living in Louisiana by 1860.

Gravestones:

John Brownlee Jr. and his wife Jane Brownlee are buried at the Greenville Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Abbeville County, South Carolina. Their daughter, Sarah Ann Blain is also buried there. The father of Jane Brownlee, Samuel Agnew (1738-1791), and her brother, James Agnew (1775-1851), are also buried at the Greenville Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
