Jesse and Polly DeWesse lived around Spring Creek/Clear Fork area of Cumberland County, Kentucky.

On November 1, 1796, “Jesse Dewees & Abram Gearhart” post the bond for the marriage of Jesse Deweese and “Mary Sowder daughter of Jacob Lowder” in Montgomery County, Virginia. On the previous day, Jacob Sowder (with his mark) and Mary Sowder (with her mark) signed the statement asking “please to grant Jesse Deweese License to her Married to my Daughter Mary Sowder as witnessed this 31st Day of October 1796“; as witnessed by John Long and Abraham Gearhart. The marriage register in Montgomery County spelled the last name of Jacob and his daughter MaryLowder” on the “Register of Marriages” for Montgomery County, Virginia (see below).[1] Mary Sowder was born about 1777 in Montgomery County (Virginia); and her parents were Joacob Sowder and his first wife Elizabeth.

According to the 1820 Federal Census, Jesse Dewees (age 45 & over) was living in the township of Paoli, in Cumberland County, Kentucky. Living with Jesse was a white female age 45 and over (wife Mary), three white males age 16-25 (sons Elisha, John, & Jacob), a white female age 16-25 (daughter Mary), a white male age 16-18 (son William), a white female age 10-15 (daughter Elizabeth), three white males under ten (sons Pierson ?, Daniel, & Jesse) and a white female under ten (daughter Sarah Jane).

  • The historic Paoli Post Office is located in Clinton County, Kentucky, near the town of Albany. Paoli was named for the “Paoli Massacre” in which about 150 American soldiers were bayonetted by British troops on September 20, 1777, near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

According to the 1830 Federal Census, Jesse Dewees (60-69) was living south of the Cumberland River in Cumberland, Kentucky. Living with Jesse, was a white female age 60-69 (wife Polly), a white male 20-29 (unknown), a white female 20-29 (unknown), a white male 15-19 (son Daniel), a white female 15-19 (daughter Sara Jane), and a white male 10-14 (son Jesse).

  • Living next to Jesse Dewees, was his son Jacob Dewees (age 30-40). Living with Jacob was a white female (age 20-30), and a daughter (age 5-10).
  • Jacob DeWeese (also spelled Duese) was born in Montgomery County, Virginia, and married Anna Beckett (b. 1803, d. 1878) in Clinton County in 1824. Jacob died in Clinton County on July 10, 1890. Anna DeWeese is buried in the Caney Branch Cemetery (Albany, Kentucky). Anna Beckett’s mother, Barbary Lean Sowder, was the sister of Jacob’s mother, Mary Ann Sowder.
  • Living nearby was Larken Kenedy and his family. Living with Larken Kenedy (20-29) was a free white female (20-29), and two free white males (under 5).
