Genealogical Sketch:

After the Revolutionary War (about 1784), Ephraim Patrick moved from North Carolina (Surry County) with his parents to the previously unsettle backcountry of northwestern Wilkes County, Georgia. Ephraim Patrick’s father, John Patrick (1740-1827), and his brothers would settle (with two Brewer brothers) on the waters of Long Creek on lands ceded from the Creek and Cherokee Indians prior to the revolution.

  • Although the connection with Miller family is unclear, one of Ephraim Patrick’s sisters (Elizabeth Jane Patrick) is believed to have married William Stephenson (Stevenson?). 

Ephraim Patrick is believed to have married Isabella Miller by 1800. In 1801, his father conveyed 200 acres to Ephraim Patrick in Jackson County, Georgia (Bk D, Pg 531). In 1810, Ephraim Patrick sold this land (Bk E, Pg 513) and in 1801 purchased 250 acres on Big Creek of the Robertson Fork in Giles County, Tennessee.

According to the 1820 Federal Census, Ephraim Patrick (45 and over) was living in Pulaski Township in Giles County, Tennessee. Ephraim Patrick was living with his wife (26-44), a free white male (26-44), son (16-25), daughter 10-15), son (16-18), daughter (under 10), and son (under 10). Ephraim Patrick owned one slave.

  • Living in the next household was the brother of Ephraim Patrick, Samuel Patrick (45 and over). Samuel Patrick was living with his wife (26-44), son 26-44), daughter (10-15), son (16-18), daughter (under 10), and son (under 10). Samuel Patrick owned one slave. 

According to the 1830 Federal Census, E. Patrick (50-59) was living in Giles County, Tennessee. E. Patrick was living with his wife (40-49), a free white male (20-29), a free white female (15-19), a free white male (10-14), a free white female (10-14), a free white male (under 5), and a free white female (under 5). E. Patrick owned two slaves.

  • Living two households away was the brother of Ephraim Patrick, Samuel Patrick (40-49). Samuel Patrick was living with his wife (30-39), a free white male (15-19), two free white females (15-19), son (10-14), two daughters (10-14), two daughters (5-9), and two sons (under 5).   

According to the 1840 Federal Census, E. Patrick (60-69) was a farmer living in Giles County, Tennessee. E. Patrick was living with his wife (60-69) and a free white female (20-29). E. Patrick owned three slaves.

  • Living two households away was the son of Ephraim Patrick, J.M. Patrick (30-39). J.M. Patrick was a farmer living with his wife (20-29), three free white males (20-29), another free white female (20-29), a free white male (10-14), a free white female (5-9), and three free white females (under 5). J.M. Patrick owned two slaves.

According to the 1850 Federal Census, Ephraim Patrick (72) was living with his wife Isabella Patrick (71) in District 17 of Giles County, Tennessee. Ephraim Patrick was born in North Carolina and Isabella Patrick was born in South Carolina.

  • Living nearby was the son-in-law of Ephraim Patrick, William Harris (42). William Harris was a merchant living with his wife Jane C. Harris (35), his daughter May M. Harris (7), son John A. Harris (5), and daughter Florence Harris (3). William Harris was born in Virginia and his wife/children were all born in Tennessee.

According to the 1860 Federal Census, Isabella Patrick (83) was living with her daughter Jane C. Harris (44) and her son-in-law William Harris (55) in the Northern Subdivision of Giles County, Tennessee. William Harris was a merchant born in Virginia and Jane C. Harris was born in Tennessee. Also living with the family were Man Park (17), John A. Park (15, Florence Park (11), Sarah J. Park (9), Carrie Park (6), and R.P. Robins (24). R.P. Robins was a clerk and the children were all attending school.

Gravestones:

Ephraim Patrick and his wife Isabella Patrick are buried in the Old Mars Cemetery in Marshall County, Tennessee. Their infant son Andrew J.F. Patrick (“Age 9 months“) and daughter (“Age 6 yrs, 4 mos, 1 day“) is also buried in the Old Mars Cemetery. The father of Ephraim Patrick, John Patrick (1739-1827) also appears to have been buried in this small rural cemetery.
