Genealogical Sketch:

In March of 1861, John Shepard was born in Lamar County (Texas) where his parents farmed land east of the Paris Post Office. At the outbreak of the Civil War, his father Maderson Shepard enlisted and served as a Corporal in Company K of the Texas Infantry on September 28, 1861. On January 1, 1862, John Shepard’s father left Lamar County with his company and does not appear to have return home until after in his company surrendered at Meridian (Mississippi) on May 4, 1865.[1]

According to the 1870 Federal Census, the 9 year-old L. H. J. B. (John) Shepherd was living in the household (#332) of his father in Beat 1 of Lamar County (Paris Post Office), Texas. Born in Texas, L. H. J. B. Shepherd was living with his 38 year-old father M. Shepherd, his 35 year-old mother L. E. Shepherd, his 13 year-old sister S. L. Shepherd, his 12 year-old sister Victoria Shepherd, his five year-old sister M. F. Shepherd, and his 3 year-old sister M. J. Shepherd. His father M. Shepherd was born in Georgia; his mother L. E. Shepherd was born in Kentucky; and his sisters were all born in Texas. Living with the family were two carpenters, 28 year-old W. Dudley (born in Missouri) and 27 year-old Wm. Griffin (born in Michigan).

  • Living in Fenter Township of Hot Springs County (Arkansas) was the 32 year-old Samuel Baugh. Born in Alabama, Samuel Baugh was a farmer living with his 36 year-old wife Kelley A. Baugh, his 15 year-old daughter Elizabeth Baugh, his 13 year-old daughter Ellen Baugh (Eliza W. Baugh ?), his 11 year-old son Alexander Baugh, his 6 year-old son Janes Baugh, his 4 year-old son Thomas Baugh, his two year-old daughter Martha Baugh, and his 5 month-old son John Baugh (all born in Arkansas). 

According to the 1880 Federal Census, John Shepard was no longer living with his parents in Lamar County, Texas. Born in Georgia, John Shepard’s 48 year-old father Maderson Shepard was a farmer living in household #117 of Precinct 7 in Lamar County (Texas) with his 45 year-old wife Bettie Shepard, his 15 year-old daughter Martty Shepard, his 13 year-old daughter Mary Shepard, his 9 year-old daughter Penie Shepard, and his 6 year-old son William Shepard. Bettie Shepard was born in Kentucky and all the children were born in Texas. Similarly, Eliza W. Baugh was not living with the family of Samuel Baugh (father/uncle ?) who was now living in household #403 in nearby Precinct 3 of Lamar County, Texas. Born in Alabama, the 48 year-old Samuel Baugh was a farmer living with his 47 year-old wife C. A. Baugh, his 15 year-old son James Baugh, his 12 year-old daughter M. A. Baugh, his 11 year-old son John Baugh, his 7 year-old son Joseph Baugh, and his 4 year-old daughter Sussie Baugh (all born in Arkansas).

  • Living nearby in household #415 of Precinct 3 (Lamar County) was the 51 year-old Thomas Sheppard (relative of John Shepard ?). Born in Georgia, Thomas Sheppard was a farmer living with his 49 year-old wife Jane Sheppard, his 22 year-old daughter Mary Sheppard, his 22 year-old son Thomas C. Sheppard, his 14 year-old daughter Ida Sheppard, his 11 year-old daughter L. M. Sheppard, and his 8 year-old son W. A. Sheppard. Jane Sheppard was born in Mississippi and the children were all born in Louisiana)
  • Living in Ouachita Township of Hot Springs County (Arkansas) was the 25 year-old Eliza E. Baugh (Eliza W. Baugh ?). Born in Arkansas, Eliza E. Baugh had been divorced and was living in the household of her 27 year-old brother-in-law John D. York and her 26 year-old sister Elizabeth J. York (born in Arkansas). At the age of 21, John York had married Elizabeth Baugh in Hot Springs County (Arkansas) on April 13, 1873.[2] Interestingly, less than two weeks later the 17 year-old Eliza S. Baugh (Eliza W. Baugh ?) married 22 year-old Taylor Bell in Hot Springs County (Arkansas) on April 24, 1873.[3]   

On September 5, 1886, John Shephard married Eliza Baugh in Lamar County, Texas.[4] Eliza W. Baugh was reportedly born in Arkansas in July of 1858. Although the names of her parents remains unclear, Samuel Newton Baugh (1836-1918) appears to have been Eliza W. Baugh’s father (more likely) or her uncle. On March 16, 1854, Samuel Baugh had married Virginia Gore in Hot Springs County (Arkansas)[5]; and the 25 year-old Samuel Baugh had married 25 year-old Kittie Amo Williams in Hot Springs County (Arkansas) on March 7, 1861.[6]

  • According to the 1860 Federal Census, the 28 year-old W. White Baugh was a farmer living in household #220 of Fenter Township in Hot Springs County, Arkansas. Born in Mississippi, W. White Baugh was living with his 29 year-old wife Martha A. Baugh, his 6 year-old daughter E. D. Baugh, his 4 year-old son W. H. Baugh, and his two month-old daughter W. E. Baugh (Eliza W. Baugh ?). Martha A. Baugh was born in Mississippi, her daughter W. E. Baugh was born in Arkansas, and the older two children were born in Louisiana. Living in the preceding household (#219) was the 23 year-old Samuel Baugh, a farmer born in Alabama. Samuel Baugh was living with the 23 year-old  D. L. Carmichel, his 17 year-old wife L. Carmichel, and his 7 month-old son W. A. Carmichel.

John Shepard and his wife Eliza never had any children of their own. Yet, Uncle John Shepard would take in several of his nieces and nephews over the years. About 1890, his twelve year-old nephew Arthur Hubert Reed left the home of his mother Victoria and her third husband James W. Wilson and walked to the farm of his Uncle John Shepard to live. Arthur Reed always looked to his “Uncle John Shepard” as his father figure and would continue to live with his aunt and uncle until he married.

According to the 1900 Federal Census, the 39 year-old John Sheppard was a farmer renting his farm (household #359) west of Bee Bayon (?) in Precinct 7 of Lamar County, Texas. Born in Texas in March of 1861, John Sheppard was living with his 45 year-old wife Eliza W. Sheppard of 14 years and his 21 year-old nephew Arthur Reed. Both of John Sheppard’s parents were in Texas. Eliza W. Sheppard was born in Arkansas in July of 1854; and both her parents were born in Arkansas. A farm laborer, Arthur Reed was born in Texas in March of 1879; and both his parents were born in Texas.

  • Living close by in household #361 was John Sheppard’s Aunt Nancy Kenedy. Born in Texas, the 51 year-old Nancy Kenedy was a widow living with her 15 year-old niece Zora Kenedy, and a 21 year-old servant named Ed Ladd (both born in Texas);
  • Living close by in household #371 was Samuel N. Baugh (Eliza Sheppard’s father/uncle ?). Born in Alabama, the 63 year-old Samuel N. Baugh was a farmer living with his 66 year-old wife Kittie A. Baugh, his 36 year-old son James Baugh, his 28 year-old son John Baugh, his 26 year-old son Joe Baugh, and a 40 year-old boarder names John C. Marx. Kittie A. Baugh was born in Arkansas, and her sons were all born in Texas. The parents of Samuel N. Baugh were born in Alabama; and Kittie A. Baugh’s parents were both born in Arkansas. Born in Arkansas, John C. Marx was a wheel wright;  
  • Living close by in household #357 was John Sheppard’s Uncle George W. Kenedy. Born in Texas, the 44 year-old George W. Kenedy was a farmer living with his 38 year-old wife Mary Kenedy, his 20 year-old son Benjamin E. Kenedy, his 17 year-old son Saneil A. Kenedy, his 14 year-old daughter Sena Kenedy, his 12 year-old daughter Viola Kenedy, his 10 year-old son George L. Kenedy, his 8 year-old son David H. Kenedy, his 5 year-old daughter Ollie D. Kenedy, his 3 year-old son Marion F. Kenedy, his one year-old daughter Mary S. D. Kenedy, and his 59 year-old mother-in-law Desire Malene. Mary Kenedy and all her children were born in Texas; and Desire Malene was born in Illinois;
  • Living close by in household #355 was John Sheppard’s sister Nellie Wilmeth. Born in Texas, the 30 year-old Nellie Wilmeth was living with her 53 year-old husband Thomas Wilmeth (farmer), her 11 year-old stepdaughter Bell Z. W. Wilmeth, her 8 year-old daughter Epsie Wilmeth, her 6 year-old son Richard Wilmeth, her 3 year-old son Bertram Wilmeth, and her one year-old son Irwin Wilmeth. Thomas Wilmeth was born in Tennessee, and the children had all been born in Texas;
  • Living close by in household #341 was John Sheppard’s sister Victoria Wilson. Born in Texas, the 42 year-old Victoria Wilson was living with her 37 year-old husband James W. Wilson (farmer), her 8 year-old daughter Eliza V. Wilson, her 5 year-old son Samuel J. T. Wilson, her 4 year-old son Grantlin Wilson, her two year-old son Lem F. Wilson, her 17 year-old son Joe M. Ried, her 17 year-old daughter Lucy E. Reid, and her 14 year-old daughter Annie D. Reid (all born in Texas).

According to the 1910 Federal Census, the 49 year-old John Sheppard was a farmer living in household #353 of Precinct 7 in Lamar County, Texas. Born in Texas, John Sheppard was a farmer living with his 52 year-old wife Liza E. Sheppard, his 16 year-old nephew Richard Wilmuth, his 11 year-old nephew Irwin Wilmuth, and his 31 year-old brother-in-law Joe Baugh. Liza E. Sheppard was born in Arkansas; and her brother Joe Baugh was born in Texas as were both nephews (Richard Wilmuth & his brother Irwin Wilmuth).

  • Living in close by in household #340 was John Shepard’s niece Epsie Corbit and her brother Joe Wilmuth. Born in Texas, the 19 year-old Epsie Corbit (daughter of John Shepard’s sister Nellie Wilmuth) was living with her 27 year-old husband Robert A. Corbit (a farmer) and her 8 year-old brother Joe Wilmuth.
  • Living nearby in household #254 was John Shepard’s sister Victoria Wilson. Born in Texas, the 54 year-old Victoria Wilson was living with her 44 year-old husband James W. Wilson (farmer), her 17 year-old daughter Eliza Wilson, her 15 year-old son Grantlin Wilson, her 13 year-old son Lem Wilson, and her 10 year-old son George Wilson (all born in Texas). James W. Wilson did not know where he was born or were his parents were born. Both Victoria Wilson’s parents were born in Tennessee.    

According to the 1920 Federal Census, the 58 year-old John Shepherd owned his farm free of a mortgage in the town of Cunningham in Precinct 7 of Lamar County, Texas. Born in Texas, John Shepherd was living in household #243 with his 58 year-old wife Eliza Shepherd. Eliza Shepherd was born in Arkansas, as were both her parents. John Shepherd’s father was born in Georgia and his mother had been born in Tennessee. John Shepherd and his wife Eliza Shepherd were both illiterate.

On May 31, 1827, the 66 year-old John Sheppard died “suddenly at his home at Cunningham” in Lamar County, Texas. John Sheppard was reported to have “come in from work on his farm and expired while sitting in a chair” and to have been “survived by his wifeEliza Sheppard. The funeral service was reported to have been held “at Minter by the Rev. Branch of that place” on the afternoon of June 2, 1927.[7]

According to the 1930 Federal Census, the 74 year-old Liza Shepherd was a widow living in the household (#103) of her brother Elic Baugh in Precinct 2 of Franklin County, Texas. Born in Arkansas, the 72 year-old Elic Baugh was a farmer living with his 56 year-old wife Maggie Baugh, his 39 year-old daughter Lila S. Baugh, his 13 year-old stepdaughter Mary Stoker, and his sister Liza Shepherd. Maggie Baugh, Lila S. Baugh, and Mary Stoker were all born in Texas. Like her brother, Eliza Shepherd was born in Arkansas.

Gravestones:

John Sheppard is buried in the Minter Cemetery in rural Lamar County, Texas. However, it is not known where his wife Eliza W. Sheppard is buried.

CUNNINGHAM MAN DIES SUDDENLY TUESDAY – John Sheppard, 66 years of age, died suddenly at his home at Cunningham Tuesday at noon. He had come in from work on his farm and expired while sitting in a chair. He is survived by his wife…Funeral services will be held this afternoon at Minter by the Rev. Branch of that place.
